(Joplin, MO) – Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri announced on August 19 that they have been awarded $10,000 from UMB Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines or Bank). The funding was made possible through the Member Impact Fund, a matching grant program designed to amplify the community engagement of FHLB Des Moines member institutions that support local housing, business, and economic needs.
In Missouri, 956 applications received funding through partnerships with 174 member institutions. FHLB Des Moines matched $3 for every $1 contributed by a member institution, resulting in $6.5 million from members and $19.4 million awarded by FHLB Des Moines.
“We are incredibly grateful to UMB Bank and FHLB Des Moines for this investment in Children’s Haven and the children and families we serve,” said Stephanie Theis, MSW, LCSW, Executive Director of Children’s Haven. “This support helps ensure families facing homelessness, medical emergencies, overwhelming stress and other crises have a safe place for their children while they work toward stability.”
Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri provides no-cost, 24-hour Crisis Care for children ages birth through 17 when families are experiencing an emergency or stressful situation. Parents retain custody while children receive a safe place to stay, meals, transportation, educational support and individualized care, and families receive intensive case management and connections to community resources. The $10,000 Member Impact Fund grant will support Children’s Haven’s Crisis Care services, helping provide shelter and essential care for children while assisting parents and caregivers in resolving the crisis that brought them to the organization.
“For more than a century, UMB has remained committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Tony Mayfield, regional president for UMB Bank. “We are inspired by the work Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri does every day to make a real impact on the people in this community, and we’re honored to help move their mission forward.”
“The Member Impact Fund is designed to help our members champion organizations like, Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri, that make a real difference in their communities,” said Kris Williams, president and CEO of FHLB Des Moines. “By partnering with our members, we’re able to multiply resources and support their vital work as they continue to strengthen opportunities for the people they serve.”
Since its launch in 2023, the Member Impact Fund has provided more than $106 million in grants from FHLB Des Moines, generating over $144 million in combined support for affordable housing and community development. Notably, every eligible application submitted to the program has received funding, reflecting the Bank’s strong commitment to partnership and impact.
