Joplin Schools Names New Assistant Principal at Soaring Heights Elementary School

(Joplin, MO)Joplin Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Mark LaTurner as the next Assistant Principal at Soaring Heights Elementary School, effective July 1, 2025.

Mr. LaTurner has served as an Assistant Principal at Joplin High School since 2021. He was previously a history teacher and department chair at Joplin high School from 2011–2021 and also taught at W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Pittsburg State University and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Missouri State University.

He will succeed Mr. Josh Thompson, who recently accepted a position as the principal of Jefferson Elementary School effective this fall.

Soaring Heights head principal, Katy Booher, noted her team’s excitement to welcome Mr. LaTurner into the building.

“Mark’s proven leadership and focus on relationships will be a great fit for our student-focused team,” said Booher. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help sustain the strong momentum our team has built over the past several years. With a deep understanding of Joplin’s systems and proven expertise in academic enrichment, Mark is well-positioned to elevate our teaching learning to new heights.”

“I am excited to be a part of the team at Soaring Heights and to assist them in building on what they’re accomplishing,” said Mr. LaTurner. “I can’t wait to learn more and am ready to jump in and work to serve the students of Soaring Heights!”
