(Joplin, MO) – Joplin Area Catholic Schools has named Garrett Zoucha as the new principal of St. Peter’s Catholic Middle School and McAuley Catholic High School for the 2026-2027 school year.
Zoucha will officially assume his duties July 1. He succeeds Dr. Steve Gilbreth, who is retiring after joining the Joplin Area Catholic Schools in 2023 when he retired from Joplin Public Schools.
“Throughout the interview process, Garrett demonstrated a strong commitment to Catholic education, a genuine care for students and staff, and a clear desire to lead with both purpose and humility,” said Jess Sickman, director of schools. “We are confident that he will be a strong addition to our JACS leadership team and will continue to build upon the great work already happening within our schools.”
Zoucha holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Wayne State College. He earned two master’s degrees from Chadron State College: a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction and a Master of Arts in education administration.
During his tenure at Liberal, Zoucha earned several professional accolades, including being named the 2024 Class 1 Girls Track Coach of the Year. He also served as the offensive coordinator for the 2023 8-man All-Star Game, a position determined by a statewide vote. Under his leadership, the track program produced five state champions, broke nine school records in two years, and secured Class 1 sectional championships for the girls’ team in 2024 and 2025. As head varsity football coach, he had the most playoff wins in school history, tied for school wins in a season with 13 program records and five all state players.
St. Peter’s Middle School and McAuley Catholic educate children from 6th grade through 12th grade.
