Sara Newman Discusses Husband's Role in Shaping Joplin's Economic Development

(Joplin, MO) – Joseph Newman is described as the “godfather” of economic development in Joplin. He is credited with the creation of Joplin’s industrial parks and foundations that support education and the arts. In the next Newsmakers, his widow Sara Newman shares the Newman family history in business from the first mercantile store in Pierce City to the building of Newman’s Department Store at 6th and Main Streets.

Doug Hunt, the Director of Entrepreneurship with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce also discusses the Joseph Newman Business and Innovation Center and how it continues Newman’s mission of growing Joplin business. A video segment shares the impact of the Innovation Center as a business incubator for those who lease space there.

Newsmakers airs nightly at 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm throughout the week of March 17 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 am on Saturday, March 23 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
