Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for Wednesday, March 6 at Joplin Regional Airport

Joplin officials prepare for construction of Fire Station Building Project

(Joplin, MO)City of Joplin officials will gather with Joplin Regional Airport staff and Board Members and Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors to break ground for the Airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Building.

The Groundbreaking event will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 6, at the Air Traffic Control Tower, 600 Colonial Drive, Webb City. Please enter the tower road from Colonial Drive and park east of the Control Tower.

This 12,353-square-foot facility will house two ARFF trucks and associated equipment along with the airport personnel trained to operate them. The building will also provide storage for the airport’s snow removal equipment (SRE). All of this is required by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“There are multiple pieces of large equipment for airport operations that have to be quickly accessible to airport staff in critical situations, and this fire station will be centrally located for this purpose,” said Joplin Airport Manager Bart Starkey. “The ability of our airport personnel to respond to an incident on field in a matter of seconds is critical to aircraft safety. Snow removal and ice control are obvious concerns for all airports and are required by the FAA for airports with commercial service like ours. The ability to properly store and service this equipment will allow us to be even better prepared for emergencies.”

Crossland Construction, Inc. is the contractor for the project. Total cost is $8,681,710 with a 95/5 federal to local share. With two federal grants, the federal share totals $8,226,537 with the local share amounting to $455,173. The local share includes $22,198 for costs that were not eligible for reimbursements.

“This facility will be a valuable asset for the airport, benefitting the City of Joplin and our community,” said Joplin Mayor Doug Lawson. “Having two federal grants as part of the financial resources is an additional benefit to help pay for this essential on-field fire station and storage structure.”
