Joplin Empire Market to Host 5th Annual Chili Cookoff on January 20

(Joplin, MO) – Join the Joplin Empire Market this Saturday, January 20 for the 5th Annual Empire Market Chili Cookoff! The Market’s Lineman Hall will be full of local cooks who are vying for the title of Best Chili. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants as decided by a panel of judges. There will also be a prize for “All-Market Chili,” which will be given to the contestant who uses the most ingredients from Empire Market vendors, and a “People’s Choice Chili,” which visitors can vote for by putting dollar bills in contestants’ jars.

Public tasting begins at 10:30 am in Lineman’s Hall (Hall One). A suggested donation of $5 will allow you to visit all the contestants and get cups of chili to try. Complementary crackers will be provided. All proceeds from the tasting will go towards the Empire Market’s Bunny & Jane Newton Community Kitchen fund.

Other great market vendors will be set up as well, so you can come grab your favorite local breads, produce, win, plants, honey, eggs, coffee, pastured meat, bath and body products, and artisan goods. The market will be packed with vendors on Saturday!

As a special treat, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile will be at the market during the event and will be available for free photo ops.

From Programming & Marketing Director, Ivy Hagedorn: “We are so excited to be hosting this great event for the fifth time. Our contestants have really outdone themselves this year, and you won’t be disappointed! It’s such a fun day to bring the whole family to the Market — you can try some chili, grab some cornbread or a glass of wine, and support a great cause all at the same time.”

The market will be open for regular Saturday hours from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Chili tasting will begin at 10:30 am and will last until the chefs run out!
