(Joplin, MO) – As cooler weather begins, Joplin Parks and Recreation staff members focus on various maintenance and winterization processes throughout the parks system.
Schifferdecker Golf Course remains closed as the resurfacing of the course’s cart paths continues. With the milling phase completed, crews from Parks and the Street Division are bringing in base rock in preparation for the final phase of asphalt and paving by Blevins Construction, the contractor for the project.
During this time, crews repair the greens and overseed the course with a cool-season grass. The staff applied a refreshing coat of paint and is working on general maintenance at the Clubhouse also.
“We are addressing several areas and making some minor improvements that will provide a welcoming atmosphere for our golfers,” said Paul Bloomberg, Director of Parks and Recreation.
Parks projects at Spiva Park are planned to start on Monday, October 23, with the park closing that day through early November to allow Parks crews to shut down and winterize the fountain, grass seeding and landscape maintenance, and make minor repairs in the park. Holiday decorations will be set up following this work.
Landreth Park Pickleball Courts should open in the next few weeks. These courts that are on the south end of the park have been resurfaced and painted within the past month. The eight courts will reopen after the new paint has time to cure.
Crews will soon begin winterizing other City parks and remind the public that although parks remain open and patrolled, bathroom facilities are closed and water shut off during the winter to prevent any issues of frozen pipes.
“Although Joplin has some nice weather through the winter months, it just takes a couple of cold days and nights to freeze the pipes,” said Bloomberg. “Anyone who has suffered through frozen pipes knows the best way to take care of them is to prevent having them, which is why we shut off the water and blow out the lines. We appreciate the public understanding this as we work to provide a clean and safe environment throughout the year.”
Parks staff will also overseed parks as needed this fall. Grass seed is better able to retain moisture during the fall, and seedlings will thrive without the extreme heat that occurs in the summer months.
