(Joplin, MO) – After many years of gracing the building at the northwest corner of 6th and Main Streets, the “I Am Joplin” mural is being taken down, due to the continued deterioration of the panels and the plans of the building owner.
The 52 metal panels featuring images of Joplin citizens will be auctioned off during a silent auction at the Empire Market (931 E. 4th Street) on May 7, 2022. Between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, prospective buyers can come and bid on the panels of their choice, with a minimum bid of $25 per panel. Winners of the silent auction will be announced directly after bidding closes at 12:00 pm and you must be present to win. Payment and pickup must be done immediately after.
Proceeds from the auction will go towards the installation of the new revolving artist project the building owners are replacing the mural with and towards future downtown public art projects. A website portal for artists will be launched in the immediate future.
“While we hate to see this iconic image’s time come to an end, we look forward to this initiative showcasing multiple artists and their work,” said Lori Haun, Executive Director of the Downtown Joplin Alliance.
