(Joplin, MO) – Freeman Health System welcomes Namrata Susarla, MD, an internal medicine physician who will help fill a void in the number of family practice doctors in the Joplin community. Dr. Susarla did her training at Freeman Internal Medicine Residency Program. The teaching faculty of the residency program motivated her to interview with Freeman.
Dr. Susarla is married to Dr. Rama Challapalli Sri, who works at Freeman as a nephrologist. Dr. Susarla comes from a family of physicians and said she was inspired by her mother, who has a family care practice in India, where Dr. Susarla completed her medical school.
“My mother triggered my passion for primary care,” said Dr. Susarla. “She truly inspired me in the way she reached out to her patients and built long-term relationships with them by winning their confidence.”
Dr. Susarla said empathy is her strong point and that “shared-decision making is the key to build a good relationship in a clinical encounter.” She treats adults ages 18 and up and believes obesity is the biggest challenge for area residents because it often contributes to other diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes, among others. She believes primary care helps promote preventative health measures by working hand in hand with patients.
“The way I like to win my patients’ confidence is by first listening to them and then having conversation about the best available options to maintain their health,” said Dr. Susarla. “In this way patients can explore their preferences while making health-based decisions.”
Dr. Susarla has two daughters, a four-year-old and ten-month-old.
“Our family finds our Joplin neighborhood to be an ideal place to raise kids,” said Dr. Susarla. “People are warm and affectionate and welcoming. We have made a lot of friends.”
The family enjoys long drives and activities in and around the four-state area, including the Springfield zoo and aquarium, hiking trails in Arkansas and weekend trips to Branson.
Dr. Susarla is accepting new patients. Her office is located at 702 East 34th Street. Call 417.347.2526 to schedule an appointment.
