Upcoming ‘Newsmakers’ Episode to Focus on City of Joplin’s Proposition Renewal

Episode to air morning of Saturday July 17 and run on evenings the following week

(Joplin, MO) – The upcoming Newsmakers interview program on Missouri Southern State University’s KGCS-TV will examine the upcoming Proposition Renewal, which will ask Joplin voters if they would approve the renewal of the ¼-cent Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax on August 3, 2021.

The question is titled “Proposition Renewal” because voters originally passed this ten-year sales tax in 2001 and supported its renewal in 2011. The 2011 renewal was for a ten-year period, which expires March 31, 2022. As a renewal, if passed, this ballot issue will not increase the sales tax. It would remain the same. The renewal of this sales tax will continue to provide funding to address water retention and flooding issues with stormwater improvements over the next ten years. These funds will also be used for Parks projects, including developing park destinations along with beautification of the existing Parks infrastructure.  If approved, the sales tax will have a sunset date of March 31, 2032.

Guests on the upcoming program include Joplin Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg, Public Works Assistant Director Dan Johnson, and Proposition Renewal Citizens Committee Chairman Mike Seibert. They discuss the work of the Citizens Committee and the projects proposed to be completed with this round of funding, The group also looks back to some of the stormwater projects that were completed to help with flooding and stormwater issues, along with various park projects developed with these funds.

The program will air at 5:30 am on Saturday, July 17 on KOAM-TV and on weeknights the week of July 19 on KGCS-TV at 5:00 pm and 9 pm. It will also be uploaded to KGCS-TV YouTube channel early next week.
