Joplin’s Birthday to Be Celebrated with Connor Hotel Presentation by Local Author

(Joplin, MO) – Tuesday, March 23 is the City of Joplin’s 148th birthday, as the City was founded in 1873. As part of this year’s celebration, citizens can hear about Joplin’s well-known Connor Hotel and Thomas Connor, the man who made this historic structure possible.

The birthday event will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 23 in the City Council Chambers of Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main Street.

The program will be given by Dr. Chad Stebbins, the Director of the Institute of International Studies at Missouri Southern State University, and self-professed local history buff. Dr. Stebbins will deliver a presentation from his recently released books, The Connor Hotel and Tom Connor.

The public is welcome to attend and hear his presentation. Copies of the books will be available for purchase during the event. The Connor Hotel sells for $21.99 and Tom Connor is priced at $10. Both books can be purchased directly from Dr. Stebbins for $25.

This event is hosted by the Joplin Celebrations Commission, a group working to create awareness and events in honor of Missouri’s Bicentennial celebrated this year; Joplin’s Sesquicentennial in 2023; United States’ Sestercentennial in 2026; and Route 66’s Centennial in 2026.
