Joplin Parks and Recreation Creates Activity Challenge for the Holiday Season

(Joplin, MO) Joplin Parks and Recreation and Mercy Hospital Joplin have partnered together to bring an activity challenge to the community this holiday season.

The Roll-n-Stroll is an inclusive activity challenge open to anyone who wants to participate. With recent challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers wanted to provide an opportunity for citizens to be active while still practicing recommended safety measures.

“We created the Roll-n-Stroll to coincide with our Holiday Tree Trail at Mercy Park. People can get out and walk the trail and enjoy the decorated trees, while staying active for the Roll-n-Stroll challenge.” said Jessica Johnson, Recreation Coordinator.

The Holiday Tree Trail is a series of decorated trees from area businesses and organizations placed along a portion of the trail at Mercy Park. Trees will be lit from November 24 through January 1 and guests can view the trees during park hours, 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

“The Roll-n-Stroll is a fun and easy activity that anyone can participate in.” said Johnson. “We are pleased to have Mercy as our partner. Emphasizing good health while enjoying a community event is a great way to encourage people to get outside and move during the usual busy and stressful times the holiday season can bring. It doesn’t matter if you ride your bike, roller skate, use your walker or wheelchair, or walk or run. The point is to be active this holiday season however you can. Anyone can participate.”

There is no charge to participate in the Roll-n-Stroll challenge. Those interested in participating must register with Joplin Parks and Recreation and track at least five activities during the challenge period on a tracking sheet. Those who track five or more activities by December 31 and return their trackers to the Parks and Recreation Department will receive a Roll-n-Stroll t-shirt. To register and receive your tracking sheet, call Joplin Parks and Recreation at 417.625.4750 or visit joplinmo.org/holidaylights.
