Joplin Recycling Center Offering Free Tire Drop Off Event June 6

(Joplin, MO) – The City of Joplin will be offering a free Tire Drop-Off Event on Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the former Lone Elm Plant, 2214 N. Lone Elm Road. The drop off site is on the west side, across from the entrance to the City’s new MOmentum Bike Park and is a quarter of a mile south of the intersection of Lone Elm Road and West Zora Street. Please enter from the south on Lone Elm Road.

  • Automotive passenger tires, with or without rims, will be accepted.
  • Please remove water and mud from inside the tires.
  • There is a ten-tire limit per vehicle, and multiple visits are not allowed.
  • Semi, tractor, ATV, lawn mower, and racing tires will not be accepted.
  • Tires cannot have rims larger than 20-inches.
  • Please no commercial vehicles, haulers or generators of scrap tires.

This drop-off event is available to residents of Joplin and the counties of Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barton, and Vernon. Joplin’s Recycling Center works closely with the Region M Solid Waste District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for such collections.

Since the 1990s, when whole tires were banned from landfills to conserve landfill space and keep out hazardous materials, citizens have needed options to discard tires. The City and our partners are pleased to offer this community service for our area.

“Our tire drop-off program gives residents a free way to dispose of old tires while helping keep neighborhoods and natural areas litter-free,” said Scott Patterson, Recycling Coordinator. “Because landfills don’t accept tires, disposal can be difficult and expensive. Unfortunately, that can lead to tires being dumped along roadsides or in wooded areas, or left in yards where they collect rainwater and breed mosquitoes.”

Tires are not permitted to be left at this location before or after the scheduled event.

The collected tires will be hauled to a recycling facility where they can be made into Outdoor furniture, playground cover, garden hoses, trash cans, rug and floor mats, loading dock bumpers, parking lot wheel stops, road paving aggregate, running- and biking-friendly trail pavement, rubber bands, and much more! All metal rims will also be recycled.

For more information contact Patterson at 417.624.0820 ext. 1501, or visit the City’s website at www.joplinmo.org/recycling.
