(Joplin, MO) – The Joplin chapter of the National Educators Association (JNEA) will host district-wide events for Read Across Joplin Week on March 2 to 5, 2026.
Many schools and teachers in the district will participate in reading celebrations including spirit days, book swaps, extra reading schedules, book ‘tasting’ cafes, community guest readers and more. JNEA members are also distributing Read Across Joplin 2026 bookmarks to every Joplin Schools student in recognition of the themed week.
One of the main components of Read Across Joplin week will be scheduled time for students, staff, and educators in every school and grade level to Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.). This will take place at 9:00 am Thursday, March 5, in participating buildings and classrooms.
JNEA representative and South Middle School communication arts teacher Tashena Karcher said, “Reading is a vital part of our students’ success and it’s something to celebrate! JNEA would like to partner with all Joplin Schools locations to take advantage of a long-standing Read Across America tradition during the first week of March so we can ramp up a community focus on the importance of making time to read.”
In addition to the bookmark for every student, JNEA has also distributed a list of possible resources and activity ideas for teachers and schools to implement during the week-long celebration.
“Ultimately, we want this to be a recurring event that all of Joplin can get behind,” said Karcher. “Reading really is the foundation for so much of what our students are learning and for the ways they’ll go on to be successful in the future.”
