(Joplin, MO) – The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has released the 2025 Annual Performance Report (APR) scores for public school districts statewide, showing significant improvement for Joplin Schools.
The district’s APR score rose from 69.1% in 2022 to 81% in 20205, reflecting steady progress across multiple areas. Much of this progress can be attributed to district-wide curriculum updates, stronger assessment practices, improved graduate rates, better data collection, and a focused approach through the district’s Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP).
“We’ve been intentional about every step we’ve taken to improve student outcomes, and it’s rewarding to see those efforts pay off,” said Dr. Sarah Mwangi, Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services. “We’re on track in English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, and we’re just two points away in math, which is a key district goal. What’s especially encouraging is that we’re seeing gains not only among general education students but also among our at-risk populations.”
DESE uses the Missouri School Improvement Program 6 (MSIP 6) to determine accreditation for school districts. This system, launched in 2022, combines data over a three-year period, including student achievement, comparative growth, graduation rates, continuous improvement efforts, and more.
“Improving outcomes for thousands of students requires a lot of teamwork,” said Mwangi. “Our teachers and support staff have truly come together to make positive change, and we’re excited to keep building on this progress.”
