(Diamond, MO) – George Washington Carver National Monument’s (GWC) restoration of the Carver Family Cemetery wall has been completed!
This project was funded through the Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund. Over the course of five weeks, the Maintenance Action Team of masons from the Historic Preservation Training Center in Frederick, Maryland carefully disassembled and reassembled the fieldstone to create a wall that is structurally sound, sustainable, and historically appropriate, performing all heavy labor in punishing heat. Overall, there is about 875,000 pounds of stone in the wall.
The wall protects the historic cemetery where members of the Moses Carver family are buried, as well as relatives and Diamond Grove neighbors. Carver is buried at Tuskegee University, where he passed in 1943. However, the Carver Family Cemetery is one of the few historical resources that still remain at the park from the time of Carver’s birth and early childhood.
In the coming weeks, GWC will be sending out more information on upcoming special events at the park, such as the annual Storytelling Day. We hope you will come and enjoy them, and share the details with your family, friends, and supporters. But you have the opportunity to see the park and the completed wall any day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, and admission is free!
Stay cool, and we hope to see you in the park sometime soon!
