Charles McPherson: The Journey Home, the Multi-Event Homecoming Celebration of World-Renowned Jazz Musician and Joplin Native

(Joplin, MO) – Join us for this multi-event homecoming celebration! Charles McPherson, world-renowned jazz musician and Joplin native, will visit Joplin February 18–19, 2022, for a series of events, including a ticketed fundraiser performance and a free, public performance. McPherson was born in Joplin and moved to Detroit at the age of nine, where he studied with renowned pianist Barry Harris and started playing jazz professionally at age 19. From there, McPherson’s career would take off, expanding rapidly and taking him to concert venues, festivals, orchestras, and jazz halls across the globe. Having played with some of the best groups and artists that the jazz industry has to offer, McPherson has become a highly revered saxophonist whose work continues to astound and impress.

Homecoming Celebration (Fundraiser Performance): Friday, February 18, 2022 | 7:00 pm | Joplin Empire Market | $55

This exclusive event benefits the creation of a Black History Mural featuring Charles McPherson, Langston Hughes, and other prominent Black artists who performed in Joplin or have made an impact on our community. Ticket includes a performance by Charles McPherson and his band; special father/daughter duet performance with ballerina Camille McPherson; meet-and-greet with the artists; catered dinner from Hackett Hot Wings; and the unveiling of the Black History Mural design (with Kansas City-based artist Alexander Austin). The Journey Home (Free Performance): Saturday, February 19, 2022 | 7:00 pm | Central Christian Center

Renowned jazz musician Charles McPherson returns to his hometown of Joplin, Missouri for a free performance at Central Christian Center and you’re invited! Make your free reservation today and hear McPherson perform on Saturday, February 19. Reservations are not required, but are highly recommended for this free performance! At the request of the artist, additional COVID-19 safety protocols have been put in place for Mr. McPherson’s visit. Those who do not adhere to these stated protocols will not be permitted — no exceptions.

All attendees 12 and older are required to provide ONE of the following to be admitted into either performance:

  1. Proof of full vaccination (final dose received at least two weeks before the show). Vaccination cards, printed copy of vaccination cards, or photo on mobile device will be accepted.
  2. OR Printed and dated proof of a negative COVID-19 diagnostic (PCR or antigen) test taken within 72 hours to attend.

Additional COVID protocols:

  • Children age 11 and younger can attend with printed and dated proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to entry.
  • All patrons will also be required to wear a mask while inside the venue(s) unless actively eating or drinking.

Charles McPherson: The Journey Home is a collaboration between Connect2Culture, Langston Hughes Cultural Society, The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center of Joplin, Post Art Library, Pro Musica, Spiva Center for the Arts, and Visit Joplin.
