(Joplin, MO) – Citizens interested in running for a Joplin City Council seat in April 2022 may pick up their nominating petitions from the City Clerk starting at 8:00 am on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Petitions must be returned to the City Clerk by 5:00 pm, January 11, 2022 to be eligible for the April 5, 2022 election.
The Council will have five seats on the ballot, including three general seats and the seat in both Zone 1 and Zone 4. Currently Ryan Stanley, Doug Lawson, and Anthony Monteleone hold the general seats. Gary Shaw holds the Zone 1 seat and Diane Reid Adams holds the seat in Zone 4. All seats will be elected for a term of four years.
In order to be eligible, citizens are required to be a qualified voter and have been a Joplin resident for at least four years immediately prior to the election. They will also be required to show their voter identification card to the City Clerk when applying for the election.
General seat candidates must obtain 150 certified signatures from qualified Joplin voters throughout the city. Zone candidates need to live in the zone in which they are seeking a position and will need to obtain 150 certified signatures from qualified Joplin voters, with 75 of those coming from the represented zone. The City website has a map of the four legislative zones, which can be accessed here. Zone elections are included in the citywide ballot. All candidates will be required to sign a declaration of candidacy with the City Clerk’s office.
Candidates can seek the state requirements for filing financial reports on their campaigns through the County Clerks’ offices.
