Joplin Schools Names New Principal for McKinley Elementary School

(Joplin, MO) Joplin Schools is pleased to announce the promotion of Shelby Frakes as head principal at McKinley Elementary, effective July 2026. She will succeed Jason Riddle, who retires at the end of the school year.

Frakes has served Joplin Schools since 2011 when she began teaching at Emerson Elementary School shortly after the May 2011 tornado. She later became part of the consolidation of Emerson and Irving Elementaries, having opportunities to teach both second and third grades. Frakes called upon her experience in school consolidation to ensure a successful transition for Dover Hill students. She has served as Assistant Principal for Dover Hill Elementary since 2023.

Frakes earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Missouri Southern State University in 2010 and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from William Woods University in 2018.

“Over the last several years, Ms. Frakes has honed her leadership skills through a successful transition from two schools to what is now Dover Hill Elementary,” said Joplin Schools superintendent Dr. Kerry Sachetta. “She has worked with several programs within the school and understands school improvement. We are excited for Ms. Frakes to lead the staff at McKinley Elementary and continue the good work and improvements that have been put in place.”

“I am honored to join the McKinley Elementary School team and continue serving students and families in this new role,” Frakes said. “McKinley’s strong tradition and close-knit community makes it a special place to work. I look forward to building meaningful relationships and working together with staff and families to support every student’s success.”
