Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) is pleased to announce that Dr. Kerry Johnson, chair of the Department of Mathematics, will serve as the interim dean of the College of Business, Communication and Technology. Johnson steps into this role following the upcoming retirement of Dr. Elke Howe, who has served as dean of the college since 2023.

Howe, who will retire at the end of the spring semester after a nearly four-decade long career, has had a distinguished career at MSSU. Joining the university in 2001, she served in various roles including professor, department chair, and dean. In 2017, Howe was honored with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education by the Missouri Coordinating Board of Higher Education. She holds an Ed.D. from the University of Arkansas, a bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering and Technology, and an MBA from Pittsburg State University.

Reflecting on her tenure, Howe shared, “I am deeply thankful for the opportunities I have had at Missouri Southern. The memories I have created with students, colleagues, and community members over the years are truly priceless. These experiences will always hold a special place in my heart as I embark on this new chapter.” Her passion for engaging with students and her focus on preparing them for successful careers has left a lasting impact on the university.

Johnson, a dedicated member of the MSSU community for over 27 years, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He earned both his master’s and doctorate degrees from Oklahoma State University. Known for his commitment to student success, Johnson is well-prepared to guide the college through this transition and ensure its continued growth and success.
