(Neosho, MO) – On September 13, 2024, at 9:30 am, a MedFlight from Joplin landed south of Smith Hall at Crowder College’s Neosho campus to demonstrate real-world training for EMT students.
The flight nurse gave a presentation to the students about the utilization of medical helicopters in emergency responses. The students then practiced loading a simulated patient on to the helicopter to learn about the proper health and safety measures that an EMT would provide in a real MedFlight scenario.
Due to the rural nature of the communities in which Crowder College serves, it’s fairly common for resources like a helicopter
to be utilized in emergency response situations. This helps better prepare students for the range of resources they may need when working in the field.
“I believe it’s a good idea to do this during initial education and we have done so in previous EMS classes,” said Steve Howe, Crowder College EMS Instructor. “I think it sparks an interest to further their education since flight crews require specialized certifications.”
