NAACP Missouri Southern State University Chapter to Host Joplin School Board Candidate Forum

Four candidates for two spots will be on the ballot on April 2, 2024

(Joplin, MO) – NAACP Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) Chapter will host a Joplin School Board Candidate Forum at Joplin’s Memorial Education Center (825 S Pearl) on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 6:30 pm. During this public forum Taija Jones, president of the newly formed NAACP MSSU Chapter, will moderate a discussion about pressing issues within the school district and their proposed solutions. The forum will be an insightful and engaging evening where you can learn about the candidates’ visions for the district and their commitment to our schools.

The NAACP has highlighted the significance of an inclusive educational system that commences at the community level, focusing on advocating for equity and driving progress for all students. With the Joplin School Board elections quickly approaching this free School Board Candidate Public Forum is of utmost importance as four candidates are vying for two spots on the school board. The candidates include the incumbents Rylee Hartwell and John Hird, as well as challengers Derek Gander and Victor Sly.

Serita Eldridge, President of the NAACP Joplin Branch said “This opportunity to hear from candidates is essential as we collectively work towards a more inclusive and enriched educational environment for all students. Regardless of attendance, we encourage everyone to get out and vote on April 2nd. Many only vote during presidential elections but voting for the people running our city and our schools is just as important as voting for the people who run our country.”

Following the forum, someone will be available to answer questions about voting and voter registration. On, April 2 citizens will also vote for five City Council members and the Renewal of the Capital Improvement Sales Tax, Proposition Progress.
