City of Joplin Sets Public Meeting for February 6 to Discuss First Round of Neighborhood Stormwater Projects

The City of Joplin has identified a number of stormwater improvement needs throughout the city. Some improvement projects are funded and will be completed through the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax, while others remain unfunded. To address some of the unfunded needs, the City applied for and was awarded an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) stormwater grant administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in 2023.  With this grant, the City anticipates completing nine improvement projects, which have been divided into “Group A” and “Group B.”

The City has begun working on “Group A” and will hold a public meeting to receive input from neighboring residents for consideration in the design and other aspects of the project. The five locations of the first stormwater improvements include:

  • Texas Avenue, 11th to 16th Streets
  • 9th Street, St. Louis to Connecticut Avenue
  • East Town – N. Cox Avenue to N. Railroad Avenue; and Pool Road to Hill Street
  • 5th and Porter Ditch and Culbert
  • Ten Pin Lane (College Heights Addition)

The open house public meeting with City engineering staff and representatives of Olsson, the design engineer for the project, will be 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the Joplin Public Library’s Community Room, 1901 E. 20th Street. Citizens may drop by any time during these hours to view the plans, ask questions, and provide input on the upcoming project. Introductory remarks will be made at the top of the meeting, and staff will be available to visit with citizens until 6:30 pm.

A comment sheet will also be available for residents to provide their remarks on proposed projects. This sheet may be turned in at the public meeting or mailed to the City after the meeting has occurred.

If unable to attend the meeting and would like to discuss the project, citizens should contact Chris Parker at 417.624.0820, ext. 1584 (cparker@joplinmo.org) or Dan Johnson at 417.624.0820, ext. 1530, (djohnso1@joplinmo.org).

In case of inclement weather, the City will reschedule this meeting. Please watch the City’s website or visit the City’s Facebook page on the day of the meeting for updates.
