KKOW 860 AM Celebrates 86 Years

(Pittsburg, KS)American Media — an affiliate of Mansion Entertainment Group — is celebrating 86 years of broadcasting on KKOW-AM 860!

To commemorate the event, a reception and open house will be held at the KKOW studios located at 1162 East Highway 126 in Pittsburg, Kansas at 11:00 AM Wednesday October 11, 2023. The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce will also be on hand for a ribbon cutting. Light refreshments will be served, as well as drawings for prizes.

“It makes me truly proud when I think of the history KKOW AM has been a part of, witnessed and reported on for the last 86 years — serving our community, listeners, and clients,” said Steve Smith, American Media’s Director of Programming.

KKOW-AM was founded by E. Victor Baxter and Lester L. Cox, and signed on to air October 11, 1937. The original call letters were KOAM and were used until May 18, 1981 when the station sold to Gene Bicknell of American Media Investments; the call letters were then changed to KKOW.

860 AM is a 10,000-watt station and now simulcasts at 97.5 FM to the greater Joplin area. Its format is Classic Country Hits, agriculture news and markets can be heard each weekday, and Kansas City Royals baseball games and Kansas City Chiefs football games are broadcast on the station.
