JPL’s New Pollinator Garden
Thanks to a series of collaborations, a new pollinator garden was installed at the Joplin Public Library last month. The new garden will provide for butterflies, bees, birds, and will be a welcome addition to the Library on its west side.
The project got its start when three MOSO CAPS students, who hoped to use the idea to complete their CAPStone project, approached Library officials in January. The students worked with Library Director Jeana Gockley to find a space for the garden, conducted some preliminary research on what native plants to install, and raised $300 to use towards the project. In April, students completed their CAPStone project, presenting the Butterfly Garden as part of a pitch event at Missouri Southern State University.
At that point, Gockley reached out to Chert Glades Missouri Master Naturalist and native plant enthusiast Val Frankoski toa ks for help and guidance to complete the project. With the help of nearly 20 volunteers, the garden was planted on Monday, September 18 and will be maintained by Friends of the Joplin Public Library.
Resource Spotlight
In partnership with Friends of the Joplin Public Library, JPL recently launched their Lucky Day Collection! The Lucky Day Collection is a collection of highly popular books that are available for immediate check-out, even if there are multiple holds on the title in the regular collection. Titles are first-come, first-served and available on the top of the New Fiction section in the Circulation Lobby. Patrons may check out up to two titles at a time for two weeks.
To determine what gets added to the Lucky Day Collection, Library staff run regular reports to identify books that have waiting lists and then purchase extra copies, whether for Lucky Day or for the regular collection. The collection recently launched with 24 titles and is now up to 26, with a total of 72 books being circulated. Patrons have been very excited about the new collection, so come in today and see if it’s your lucky day!
