Granny Shaffer’s Family Restaurant Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

(Joplin, MO)Granny Shaffer’s Family Restaurant, a longtime community favorite, is proud to announce its 50th anniversary milestone! What began as a small Tastee Freez in 1973 has grown into an iconic family establishment with delectable dishes, a warm atmosphere, and exceptional service.

From the outset, the restaurant was a family endeavor, with Karen and David Shaffer, and their children Ruth, Steven, and Debra, working alongside each other, making the bond they shared with their patrons even more special. Granny, renowned for her loving nature and keen sense of humor, quipped that she always knew where her children were on the weekends —she simply made the schedule herself!

In 1975, the restaurant underwent a transformation and became Shaffer’s Big Q, signifying the first many milestones, including:

  • 1985 – Granny Shaffer’s Family was introduced
  • 1993 – Second location opened on W. 7th Street, operated by Steven Shaffer
  • 1993 – Third location opened at 7th Street and Illinois
  • 1993 – Mike Wiggins joined the family
  • 1996 – Dixieland Chicken was introduced alongside Granny Shaffer’s

Tragically, in 2005, the family faced a heartbreaking loss when Granny passed away. Her departure left a void that could never be filled, but her spirit endured within the restaurant’s walls, where memories of her love and passion for cooking lived on through the recipes she created and the smile she ignited.

As Granny Shaffer’s Family Restaurant celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the Shaffer family expresses deep gratitude to their loyal patrons and the community. Their unwavering support over the years has been the heart and soul of the restaurant’s success. Granny used to say, “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first!”

The family plans to commemorate with ribbon cuttings, special menu items, and other surprises throughout 2023. The celebrations will begin on Friday, August 4, 2023, with an open house from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at 2728 North Range Line. Mr. Shaffer and Shaffer family members will be there to help celebrate, as well as former employees and friends.
