(Joplin, MO) – The exhibition, “Corners of the World” showcases work with a global theme by Bachelor of Fine Art, design candidates Jessica Carmona and Jada Samuel; Bachelor of Arts, visual art major Conalee Churchwell; and Bachelor of Science in Education, Art Education major Eymi Perez-Lopez. On display Friday, May 5, 2023, through Saturday, May 13, 2023 the exhibition is free and open to the public and will be held in Missouri Southern State University’s Spiva Art Gallery. The artists will be present in the gallery for public receptions including light refreshments both Friday May 5 and May 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
- Conalee Churchwell, Joplin MO, after coming back from a year-long study-abroad experience in Seoul, Korea as part of her studies at MSSU, her art now examines her experiences and identity as a Korean American and the profound impact of what that means both here in southwest Missouri as well as in Korea.
- Eymi Perez-Lopez, Carthage, MO, spent five weeks travelling in Europe last summer with the department of art and design’s Summer in Scandinavia study abroad program. In her artwork, she uses the theme of flowers, the color pink, and glitter to simultaneously spread enthusiasm and happiness while showcasing a portfolio spanning a range of skills, media, and techniques appropriate to teaching in the classroom.
- Jessica Carmona, Webb City, MO, held an internship documenting a large-scale community mural and for her capstone project examines how, despite a slick and choreographed outer veneer, there are negative aspects with the Korean popular music (K-pop) Idol culture and industry. She explores using motion graphics to help overcome the impact of grueling years of systematic training and ever-present social media criticism on the mental health of those performers.
- Jada Samuel, Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI), fuses themes of identity, ethnicity, and culture from her home country through multiple types of designs created for a range of business ventures. While earning her degree at MSSU, she initiated the Caribbean Student Association and served as an intern for the Lion Co-op, making full use of her additional minors in marketing and management. She was also awarded as the department of art and design’s 2022-23 Outstanding Design Major.
The mix of racial, ethnic, and cultural identity, themes, concepts, and experiences displayed in this exhibition coupled with the transformative and immersive programming these students encountered at Missouri Southern showcases the impact and importance of MSSU’s international mission and the institution’s commitment to educate and graduate knowledgeable, responsible, successful global citizens.
Each semester this exhibition series features works by graduating seniors as part of their Department of Art and Design degree requirements. The MSSU Spiva Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Complex and is free and open to the public. Hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
