Freeman Health System Celebrates National Nurses Week

Freeman Nurses Are Rooted in Strength

(Joplin, MO) – Nurses are at the heart of healthcare, and Freeman Health System is celebrating all they do during National Nurses Week (May 6 to 12).

“Each year, we celebrate the profession of nursing during National Nurses Week,” said Chief Nursing Officer Jeanee’ Kennedy. “It is a special time set aside for us to recognize the extraordinary work that nurses do in our health system and communities.”

This year, Freeman hosted a t-shirt design contest for nurses to submit their design ideas to be voted on by all Freeman nurses. The winner was Heather Workman, RN, Freeman Onboarding Specialist.

“Heather’s design showcases all the characteristics of a Freeman nurse and will be one of two Nurses Week shirt designs available for purchase throughout most of May,” said Kennedy.

“I feel honored that my design was selected by my friends and coworkers,” said Workman. “I was hoping that the design would be a direct representation of nurses as a whole. There are a lot of other descriptive words that could have been used, but the words I chose are descriptive of Freeman nurses, who should be celebrated because they work hard day and night, tending to patients’ needs. They are comforters, supporters, and healers to the best of their abilities, often putting others’ needs before their own.”

Nursing is a challenging career but was even more so during the pandemic. While nurses say the rewards outweigh those challenges, Kennedy says their perseverance deserves recognition because they are rooted in strength, forged in fire, and growing in power.

“We have a week filled with events and giveaways, and we are excited to celebrate the strength, resilience, passion, and commitment of our profession. Honoring and appreciating the work of nurses is something we are proud to do and look forward to each year!”

Nurses Week celebration events include a nurses’ area decoration contest, barbecue, treats, recognitions, themed basket raffles, pancake feed, giveaways, and more.
