(Joplin, MO) – Offering a blend of favorites from the Broadway stage, films and television, and other familiar tunes, “Southern Showcase, Onstage!” will be presented from Thursday, April 28, to Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 pm each night in the Bud Walton Theatre at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU).

The production will feature the Missouri Southern Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale, and soloists.

“It’s something decidedly different from the other yearly choral performances,” said Dr. David Sharlow, director of choral activities at Missouri Southern. “It’s another way for our musical theatre and musical performance students to enhance their experience.”

The show — which will be presented in two acts — is directed by Dr. Diana Allan, associate professor of music. She said audiences can expect an intimate musical experience.

“It’s in the Black Box Theatre, so the audience will be up close and personal with the performers,” she said. “It’s a revue of hits from the past and more contemporary numbers. There will be songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and others … a lot of fun, toe-tapping choral numbers.”

The vocal groups and soloists will be accompanied by Glenda Austin on piano, and a combo featuring guitar, bass guitar and percussion, Allan said.

The Friday performance will include a special recognition for Dr. Susan Smith, the retired vocal professor who started the annual “Onstage!” production at MSSU. She recently donated a significant collection of books, musical scores and compact discs to the department.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $10 for students, seniors and military members. They can be purchased here.
