(Neosho, MO) – The Social Science Division at Crowder College is hosting a speaking event in regards to the Sutherland Collection, a collection of books about the Civil War era donated by Dr. Daniel E. Sutherland, a recently retired history professor at the University of Arkansas and the author or editor of more than fifteen books. The event, which was rescheduled from its original date in February due to winter weather, will take place on September 8, 2022.
“The Sutherland Collection is the largest, most comprehensive Civil War collection in our area,” stated Dr. Denna Clymer, Social Science Division Chair.
“Hundreds of Little Wars: Community, Conflict, and the Real Civil War in the Ozarks” will be presented by Dr. Matthew M Stith. Stith is an associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Tyler where he teaches and writes about military and environmental history. He earned his BA in History at Missouri Southern State University, followed by his MA and PhD at the University of Arkansas. Since then, he has written or edited four published or forthcoming books that explore elements of the Civil War, Vietnam War, and World War I along with several articles and book chapters. When possible, he also researches and writes about the natural and cultural history of bears in America. For more information on Stith, click here.
The Sutherland Collection will add to resources in the Lee Library at Crowder College. The college also houses the Herb and Barbara Schade Rare Books Archive, which includes many one-of-a-kind publications.
This event is free and open to the public. Staff will be on hand to share the collection with those in attendance.
