(Joplin, MO) – The Social Work Department at Missouri Southern State University will host an Elder Care Boot Camp workshop from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday, January 21 in the Mills Anderson Justice Building auditorium.
The purpose of the event is to help people as they learn to navigate elder care and related issues, such as legal considerations; how to recognize elder abuse and neglect; the porting process; and how to access available services.
The event will be split in three sessions:
Attorney Christopher Dumm of The Law Firm of Christopher W. Dumm will lead the first session, “Protecting Their Wealth” at 9:00 am.
Jenn Berry, assistant director of outpatient services at Ozark Center, and Sara Bybee, a hospice medical social worker with Integrity Home Care & Hospice will present the second session, “Protecting Their Health” at 10:00 am.
Bybee will lead a panel discussion on elder care and options at 11:00 am.
“This is an event for anyone in the community who is helping with elder care,” said Jannette Eldred, chair of the Social Work Department. “Oftentimes there is a lack of immediate information, compared to finding information about child care. Sometimes people can be embarrassed to ask for help.
“We want to offer community information about services that are available, as well as the legal and financial issues unique to elder care.”
Social workers who attend the event will receive two Continuing Education Unit credits, said Eldred.
