Joplin Public Library Summer Reading Program, June 1 – July 25

(Joplin, MO) Joplin Public Library (JPL) is excited to present their annual all-ages Summer Reading Program from June 1 through July 25, with the theme “Tails and Tales!”

No Library card is required to participate in the Summer Reading Program; however, this year, for the first time ever, the Joplin Public Library is extending this offer of a free Summer Reading Library card to everyone! No matter your age or where you live, you are eligible for a free JPL card to be used from June 1 through July 25. You may check out physical items from the Library including books, DVDs, and more. You can also use the card to access our awesome digital resources. And, Joplin Public Library cards are always free for in-city residents of Joplin. To receive yours, simply bring a recent piece of mail and your photo ID to the Library to register.

The JPL Summer Reading Program is a free program designed to keep the public reading, learning, and exploring all summer. After sign-up, children, teens, and adults alike will participate by tracking the minutes they read or listen to their favorite materials (books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, etc.) on a paper gameboard that is handed out in the Library or on the easy, free, and fun app called “Beanstack.”

Goals for each age group are set accordingly, and are very achievable. Adults will help pre-readers participate by tracking the amount of time the young child has been read to. As participants achieve the reading goals, and complete fun and interactive self-moderated activities, they will earn prizes plus entries into grand prizes giveaways! All participation is self-guided and completely optional.

Another aspect of the Summer Reading Program includes fun, educational, and theme-based Library-hosted events. (Summer Reading Programs will be offered this year in a virtual format only, due to COVID-19 precautions relating to the regularly large attendance numbers.) The public is invited to participate in the variety of these virtual programs, as desired. Find the comprehensive calendar of events here.

This year, the Summer Reading Program features two exciting partnerships with the City of Joplin. First, the Transportation Department is providing free Sunshine Lamp and MAP Transit passes for adults and teens when they sign up for the Summer Reading Program (child Trolley rides are always free)! The pass will be good for the whole summer, and recipients may travel wherever they wish on the routes. Second, the Parks and Recreation Department is providing a free single-use pool pass to children who complete their first gameboard! Pool passes are good for one-day access to one of three Joplin aquatic centers Schifferdecker, Cunningham, or Ewert.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins in the Library on Tuesday, June 1 and goes throughout the months of June and July, ending on July 25. Sign up anytime within those dates to start your adventure!
