Joplin Little Theatre Spotlight for January 2021

President’s Message

Happy New Year to all our devoted theatre patrons. 2020 was quite a year, but we survived and are ready to tackle 2021. I wish we had a show line-up for you but sadly COVID-19 is still here and Joplin Little Theatre (JLT) is dedicated to providing only safe venues for all of you.

We do have a special event planned in late February An Evening with Langston Hughes. In conjunction with the Langston Hughes Cultural Society, we will celebrate this Joplin native and acclaimed poet. I am sure this will be a profound event. Final dates and ticket information will be forthcoming.

So as we continue to create safe and great entertainment, we thank you for your continued support. To be sure, we will return again under the Red Roof.  Angela Lowe, President, Joplin Little Theatre

Remembering Sam Claussen

Sam Claussen, longtime JLT supporter and MSSU theatre professor

The JLT family, and many friends and colleagues in the area, have lost a loved member. Sam Claussen died on Sunday, January 3, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Sam was a professor in the theatre department at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU), where he taught classes and handled the stage lighting for many productions at MSSU. He was active at JLT, both as an actor and in contributing his talents in staging and lighting. He appeared in The Gondoliers in 1969; in The Fantasticks in 1988, giving a “revealing performance” as The Man Who Dies, according to director Chet Fritz; and Barnum in 1992 as Tom Thumb.

Sam was the founder of the Claussen Dream Team, which included his wife Pam, daughter Jessie, son-in-law Ryan, son Josh, daughter Stacy, son Brandon, and grandchildren Dylan and Kaylin. Through them, his legacy lives on!

Full military services for Sam will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Mount Hope Cemetery at the Veterans Wall. Following the services will be a celebration of life at the Banquet Center behind Granny Shaffer’s on Range Line Road. Both services will be live streamed for anyone who is unable to attend.
