(Joplin, MO) – Eight local high-school seniors were recognized as recipients of the Golden Lion Award during an event held Tuesday, June 8, at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU).
While there are many scholarships that recognize academic, athletic, or other talents, the purpose of the Golden Lion Award is to recognize service. Recipients must be a high-school senior who has demonstrated a desire to positively impact their community through volunteerism efforts.
The scholarship is made possible by the generosity of H.E. Williams, KSN-TV and KODE-TV (Nexstar Broadcasting). Each award recipient was spotlighted in a special news segment during the 2020-21 academic year.
Jillian Kennedy, a senior at Carl Junction High School, was recognized as the overall Golden Lion recipient and received a $5,000 scholarship to Missouri Southern.
She was a member of Student Council at CJHS and also played volleyball. Her volunteer work includes a mission trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, through Christ Church of Oronogo; creating care packages for health-care workers through the high school’s Spanish National Honor Society; as well as blood drives, book drives, and other activities through a variety of student organizations.
Kennedy plans to attend Missouri Southern in the fall to study psychology.
