(Joplin, MO) – Join the fun on Saturday, September 19 as Joplin Empire Market celebrates Hobbit Day, and the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Community Garden as well as the main Market halls.
Activities include, but are never limited to:
- Goats! (Nothing to do with Hobbits, but goats are still neat).
- Fall seeds for planting. (No Mallorn seeds, unfortunately).
- Kids activities, including a tiny pot painting and coloring pages.
- Photo booths where you can get a picture in a Hobbit House of your own!
- A Lord of the Rings-themed story quote walk
- Riddles in the Dark Scavenger Hunt
- A chance to put your name in the Runaway Barrel and win a prize if you come in costume.
Visitors are encouraged to dress up in their best Tolkien (or other fantasy) clothes as if they are attending an eleventy-first birthday party and be ready for some fun, merriment, and perhaps even hijinks.
Please note that Sackvile-Bagginses are still very, very much not invited. Thank you. Harrumph.
The event is free and open to the public to attend, but we hope you’ll patronize some of the vendors in the market halls. Visitors can shop all three market halls plus outdoor stalls to browse a selection of fresh produce, pastured meat, artisan goods, coffee from Cottage Small Coffee Roasters, live music in the cafe are from local favorites, and ready-to-eat food.
“Hobbits love food. Hobbits love gardening. So it just makes sense that the Empire Market would be the perfect place for Hobbits,” says Lori Haun, director of Downtown Joplin Alliance.
