Drivers using Joplin’s Langston Hughes/Broadway Bridge will need to make route adjustments next week when the City of Joplin closes the structure for repairs.
The bridge, constructed over Landreth Park and Murphy Boulevard, is located on Langston Hughes Boulevard/Broadway Street between Landreth and Virginia Avenues.
The bridge will close to all traffic beginning Monday, August 3 to allow crews to complete repairs to the bridge’s expansion joints. The bridge is expected to reopen on Friday, August 14.
During a recent inspection, staff identified sections of the bridge’s expansion joint that had become dislodged on July 27. To protect the traveling public and prevent further deterioration of the bridge, the bridge will be closed temporarily to allow the work to be completed safely and efficiently.
Expansion joints are critical bridge components that allow the structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads while protecting the bridge deck and supporting structure from water infiltration and damage. Prompt repairs will help preserve the bridge and extend its service life.
The bridge will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the duration of the project. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and allow additional travel time while repairs are underway. Detour signage will be posted to guide traffic around the closure.
