Citizen engagement is significant in municipal government, and City of Joplin officials encourage all to stay involved and find the best way to be informed about their local government. Recently, attendance at City Council meetings has grown, and the City reminds residents that, to comply with Fire Safety Codes, the Council Chambers can hold 200 people.
“We encourage public participation, and fire safety codes help us do that responsibly. Occupancy limits ensure everyone can attend in a space designed to allow safe movement, clear exits, and proper emergency access,” said Fire Chief Gerald Ezell.
The public is always welcome at City Hall; however, City officials remind the public that, for safety reasons, if attendance reaches this capacity, additional attendees will not be able to enter the Chambers. There may be other viewing options in the building, but these locations are not guaranteed to provide an efficient live stream for viewers.
The City encourages viewing the meeting by using one of the following options:
- Watch the City Council meeting live on Missouri Southern State University’s KGCS-TV, found on digital channel 21. KGCS may also be seen on regional cable television systems, including Sparklight in Joplin. Other cable systems carrying KGCS include Mediacom and Suddenlink.
- View the City’s livestream on its website.
- The Council meeting may also be streamed by other local media outlets. Please check with those organizations for availability.
Joplin City Council meetings are held at 6:00 pm on the first and third Mondays of every month on the fifth floor of City Hall, 602 South Main Street. The agenda is posted on the City’s website at noon on the Thursday prior to the meeting.
