The City of Joplin will join the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) in an Open House Public Meeting from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Thursday, March 26, at the Joplin Public Library (1901 East 20th Street). MoDOT will focus on the I-44 capacity improvements project, which will add a third driving lane in each direction between Main Street and Range Line Road.
The City’s I-44 Culvert Project, included with MoDOT’s project, to improve drainage by adding a new culvert structure under I-44, will also be presented and discussed. The culvert will be a precast concrete arch structure with an interior pedestrian trail.
“This is an exciting project for the City because it will address the necessary stormwater improvements, while also providing a safe venue for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the interstate without encountering high-speed traffic,” said Dan Johnson, Public Works Director. “Joplin continues to explore opportunities to provide multi-use trails in the community, and this will be a great addition as this area develops.”
In addition, the City will install a new box culvert under Richard Joseph Boulevard, along with a new detention basin south of this corridor, and north of 44th Street.
City officials will present this information and be available to discuss it with the public. The City’s consultant, Allgeier, Martin and Associates, Inc., and Robert Lolley, Joplin Area Transportation Organization Coordinator, will also be at the meeting to address questions.
This $10 million project is funded through the 2024 Capital Improvement Sales Tax and the 2021 Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax, approved by citizens.
