(Joplin, MO) – Clean-up continues from the significant storm damage caused in Joplin from the May 6, 2024 tornado, and the City of Joplin offers these updates and reminders for residents affected by the storm.
- Homeowners should contact their insurance company, if they have not already.
- The City has extended the City’s Tree Limb Drop-Off facility availability. It is open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily through Saturday, June 1. It will be closed on Monday, May 27, in honor of Memorial Day. Residents are encouraged to take their limbs and vegetation debris to this site located at 1702 N. Schifferdecker. There is no charge for this drop-off.
- Starting June 3, the City will provide a curbside pick-up of tree limbs and vegetation debris for residents within the designated tornado-affected areas who cannot take it to the drop-off site. Tree and vegetation debris must be at the curbside by the morning of June 3. Please do not place tree or vegetation debris on the streets or sidewalks.
- This is a one-pass service. City crews and contractors hired by the City will pick up limbs and vegetation in the impacted area starting Monday, June 3, so residents must have it to the curb by then. There will not be callbacks for returning to an area. To view the map of the tornado-impacted area that will be covered, go to the City’s website. It’s also important to note that City crews and contractors cannot enter private property to cut or get tree limbs.
- Residents affected by the storm and need help cutting and moving their tree limbs to the curb may request volunteer assistance to cut up and move trees that fell during the storm. Please call the City’s Planning, Development, and Neighborhood Services Department at 417.624.0820, ext. 1542 or 1539, and the City will match the caller with a volunteer group. This is an important step to ensure that their limbs are at curbside by June 3.
- The Joplin Fire Department has lifted the burn ban within Joplin city limits effective now through May 25, 2024. The City will not require a fee or a burn permit for these burns during this time. To determine if the fire department allows burning on that day (according to weather conditions), please call 417.623.0403 and give the address of the planned burn to Fire Department officials. Only residential vegetative material allowed: tree branches and leaves may be burned in piles that are less than six (6) feet in diameter by four (4) foot high. - For smaller, manageable amounts of debris, Joplin residents may place tree limbs with their trash on the regular trash pick-up day with Republic Services. Limbs should be cut to a maximum of four feet and tied in a bundle that weighs no more than 50 pounds. The diameter of each tree limb cannot be larger than four inches. This service is available year-round to all Republic Services customers in Joplin.
