(Joplin, MO) – The Creative Learning Alliance (CLA) convened its inaugural Youth Advisory Team in December 2023 with the sole task of creating a time capsule to be held within the future science center until the next solar eclipse that is visible in North America! The time capsule will be dedicated on April 8, 2024, at 5:30 pm at the CLA campus (300 S. Main Street).
Fourteen area students, ages six to 14, from three different school districts and two are private schools initially met monthly to develop every part of the time capsule from its conception to the its execution. With help from adult mentors, students designed the capsule itself, identified all the items to be held within it, provided the items, and chose its final location. The capsule will be locked immediately before the dedication and will not be opened until August of 2044 during the next solar eclipse that’s visible from North America.
CLA Executive Director Neely Myers said, “Watching the evolution of the thoughts of children who realized through the process of creating this time capsule that they will be between 27 and 34 years old when the capsule is opened has been really exciting. They grew to think outside the box about what might be important to remember in 20 years, and about the larger world, as the meetings progressed.”
