Kids have been out of school for a few weeks now, and you may be hearing “I’m bored” more often than you’d like. Fortunately, the Joplin Public Library (JPL) has you covered with these Summer Break Boredom Busters!
Summer Reading Programs for All Ages
First things first, make sure you’ve signed up for summer reading! Along with reading great books, JPL offers programs and activities like reading challenges, special performers, STEM activities, and more! Take a look at some of the events for June and view the full list on the Library’s website!
There will also be regular storytimes for JPL’s youngest patrons! Visit the Library’s calendar for more information on all events and programs, and don’t forget to plan ahead for everything planned in July!

Sew to Share
Thursday, June 22 | 5:30 to 7:30 pm | Grades sixth through twelfth
Learn to sew with Jen from the library’s Makerspace while doing a random act of kindness for others in our community! At this come-and-go activity, we’ll start with the basic sewing skills needed to create “Pretty Pockets” (soft, flannel drain covers for people recovering from cancer surgery) then make some pockets to donate.
Fishin’ Magicians
Friday, June 23 | 2:00 to 3:00 pm | Ages five to 12 years old
This show combines humor, magic, and puppets to celebrate reading and learning. Prepare to be amazed, entertained, and to ask “how did he do that?!” Please note that all children under the age of nine must be accompanied by an adult.
Papercrafting Card Party
Saturday, June 24 | 2:00 to 3:30 pm | Grades sixth through twelfth
Explore different types of papercrafts and make a card for someone you care about.
Family Movie Party: Encanto Sing-Along
Tuesday, June 27 | 5:30 to 7:30 pm | All ages
Come talk (and sing!) about Bruno as we enjoy the beloved movie that celebrates families and their unique gifts. Enjoy some yummy snacks while you sing along!
Dog Day Afternoon
Thursday, June 19 | 4:00 to 4:45 pm | Grades K through fifth
Dog Day Afternoon is designed to help newly independent readers become more comfortable reading! Children will have the opportunity to read to one of our sweet therapy dogs and their owner in a quiet, non-threatening environment (each child will read for approximately 8 minutes, though the exact time depends on the number of therapy dogs and children in attendance).
(During this program, children have the opportunity to read to the dogs on their own. We ask that parents/caregivers watch through our large window. For this reason, we ask that children are independent readers and are comfortable with this set up.)
Registration is required.
STEAM Kits for Kids and Teens
With some extra time at home, it’s the perfect time to check out one of the Library’s STEAM kits! These kits include activities that are designed to explore various concepts like coding, electricity, building, electronics, and more through hands-on learning.
Learn more here and check out one today.
Even More Ways to Fight Boredom
If the activities and programs above aren’t enough, don’t forget that you can always check out kid-friendly movies at the Library. Browse their catalog of family-friendly flicks here.
You can also stream Kanopy Kids’ educational programs through JPL. Learn more here.
