(Joplin, MO) – The City of Joplin’s Youth Council members are kicking off the holiday season with a literacy event and invites families to enjoy arts and crafts along with reading books related to Thanksgiving. This activity is from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 18 at the Joplin High School Library.
Families with children from ages three to ten are encouraged to join them for a unique opportunity. Members also ask people to bring a book to donate that will be passed along to organizations working with children and reading.
The Youth Council was formed in 2019 after City Council members heard a presentation from the National League of Cities focusing on the youth’s vitality within a community and the importance of providing them service opportunities. Mayor Ryan Stanley and Council member Anthony Monteleone volunteered to work on a planning committee with City staff and local school representatives to develop the parameters and focus of this advisory board.
Membership on the Joplin Youth Council is offered to high school students from Joplin’s public and private schools encouraging them to apply for this unique opportunity. Members are required to be Joplin residents and enrolled in grades 10 through 12. Terms are for one year and expire in May. Members may reapply at that time to continue serving on the council.
The board meets at twice monthly during the school year. The Youth Council has selected children literacy as one of the service project areas they will focus during the school year.
