(Joplin, MO) – The College of Business at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) will offer a new degree in entrepreneurship beginning in the fall of 2022. The program was approved by the university’s Board of Governors during their November 12 meeting.
“The bachelor of science in entrepreneurship will be geared toward any student who wants to start and run their own business venture,” said Ken Surbrugg, who serves as director of the university’s Center for Entrepreneurship. “Or it could be for students who want to gain employment with any firm that appreciates the entrepreneurial mindset.”
The prospective degree program would fit within the 120-credit-hour model and includes 54 hours of required and elective entrepreneurship courses as well as experiential learning opportunities for students. The program is awaiting approval by the Higher Learning Commission and the Missouri Department of Education and Workforce Development.

- Dr. Van Galen, university president, spoke on the value of community engagement, highlighting the 80-plus community organizations in which Missouri Southern faculty, staff and administrators are engaged.
Van Galen also highlighted the success of the recent Green & Gold Tour stops in Monett and Nevada. Events included community coffees, planting of “Home of a Missouri Southern Lion” yard signs, luncheons with local alumni, free Kona Ice for high-school students, and MSSU sponsorship and presence at during football games. The next stop will be on Thursday, January 6 in Seneca.

The main parking lot project, except for landscaping, should be complete the week of November 15. New lighting, sidewalks, donor-funded fountains, Oval infrastructure, and entrances to Hearnes, Spiva Library, Reynold’s Hall and Webster Hall are on schedule to be completed in February of 2022.
R.E. Smith was awarded the contract for the renovation of Taylor Performing Arts Center. The one-time funds for the renovation were received in the 2021 state budget, with the center expected to be complete in November 2022.
