(Joplin, MO) – An event recognizing the completion of the inaugural Firefighter Certificate course and the announcement of a new scholarship is scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the city of Joplin’s public safety training facility located at 5102 Swede Lane.
Earlier this year, the College of Health Sciences at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) announced a partnership with the Joplin Fire Department and the City of Joplin to create a regional fire academy.
The program began this summer with the Fire I course and was followed by Fire II this fall. Classes are led by training chiefs from the Joplin Fire Department. Class sizes are kept small – there are 12 students who completed the fire fighter certificate course – allowing for a focus on student safety.
“It takes a very special person to endure the long hours and treacherous work that goes hand in hand with being a member of the fire service,” said Dustin Lunow, fire training chief with the Joplin Fire Department. “These individuals possess a willingness to help and a desire to serve that is second to none.”
During the recognition ceremony, the first recipient of the Steve Fierro Endowed Memorial Scholarship Award will be announced. Fierro, a Carthage firefighter, died in the line of duty on Feb. 18, 2004. The scholarship will be given each year to a graduate of the fire academy.
“I can think of no better way to honor Steve’s service and sacrifice than to instruct and mentor the next generation of firefighters in what it means to have a servant’s heart,” said Lunow.
