About Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is observed each March across the United States and focuses on inclusion, understanding, and respect for people of all abilities. Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, the month encourages communities to recognize the rights, talents, and aspirations of individuals with developmental disabilities, while promoting equitable access, advocacy, and community participation.
DDAM highlights the importance of breaking down barriers, expanding opportunities, and fostering environments where individuals with developmental disabilities can thrive in education, employment, and community life.
About Developmental Disability Resource Board of Jasper County:
Developmental Disability Resource Board of Jasper County was formed in 1978 through Senate Bill 40 that enabled a portion of the personal property tax collected in the county to be used to assist persons with developmental disabilities. The Board established a targeted case management program in 1998, now known as Connections Abilities Resources, and hired its first Executive Director in July of 2000. DDRBJC currently serves approximately 1,160 persons with developmental disabilities in Jasper County and also operates an outreach program that assists those in the I/DD community without Medicaid.
