The Independent Living Center in Joplin is excited to announce the return of its STEPS Summer Transitional Program for Summer 2026. Designed for youth with disabilities ages 14–21, STEPS provides a supportive environment where participants can build the confidence and practical life skills necessary to help prepare for their future.
Funded in part by the Missouri Office of Adult Learning and Rehabilitation Services, the STEPS program offers weekly workshops focused on soft-skills development and real-world readiness. Sessions will be held at The Independent Living Center, with each workshop offered twice in one day to allow for flexible scheduling.
Throughout the month of June, participants will explore a wide range of important topics, including self-determination and goal setting, basic home and daily living skills, career and education pathways, financial management, and community navigation. A highlight of this year’s program includes Driver’s Education courses, offering participants a valuable opportunity to gain skills that can open doors to greater independence, mobility, and employment opportunities.
Workshops will take place on Tuesdays from June 2 through June 30, with sessions offered from 9:30 – 11:00 am and 1:30–3:00 pm.
The relaunch of STEPS marks an exciting opportunity for youth with disabilities in the region to gain hands-on experience, build confidence, and take meaningful steps toward independent living in a supportive, encouraging setting.
