(Joplin, MO) – The 7th Annual Empire Market Chili Cookoff will be hosted at the Joplin Empire Market on Saturday, January 17. Judging will start at 10:00 am. Once again, local home cooks and chefs alike will compete for the cash prizes and bragging rights in front of the general public and a panel of judges. Contestants will be bringing chilis ranging from hearty Tex-Mex-inspired versions, to smoked beef chili, steak chili, and good ol’ traditional chili.
Public tasting begins at 10:30am in the Lineman’s Hall (Hall 1) — a $5 suggested donation will allow you to visit all contestants and get cups of chili to try (until supplies run out). Complementary crackers will be provided. All proceeds from the tasting will go towards the Empire Market facility, specifically this year, the “Light Up the Night” fundraising campaign designed to bring courtyard lights back to the market, so outdoor events can be held once again at night.
Other market vendors will be set up as well, so you can come grab your favorite local breads, produce, wine, plants, honey, coffee, pastured meat, bath and body products, and artisan goods.
Cash prizes and trophies will be given for first, second, and third place as well as a trophy for People’s Choice.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Empire Market and Downtown Joplin Alliance.
From Market Manager, Leann Halsey: “We are so excited to be hosting this great event for the 7th time — our contestants have really outdone themselves this year and you won’t be disappointed! It’s such a fun day to bring the whole family to the Market — you can try some chili, grab some beer or a glass of wine, and support a great cause, all at the same time.”
The market will be open regular Saturday hours from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Chili tasting begins at 10:30 am and lasts until the chefs run out!
