Joplin History & Mineral Museum to Host Several Contests, Christmas Open House on December 13

(Joplin, MO) – Holidays are a time to find new ways to express creativity, and the Joplin History and Mineral Museum offers several opportunities to do so. Residents can create a cool ornament, build a gingerbread house, or decorate a golf ball and enter these into the contests being held by the museum. Deadline to enter is 5:00 pm Thursday, December 11.

Contest winners and other entries will be on display during the Museum’s Christmas Open House on Saturday, December 13. Held from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, the open house will feature vendors for holiday shopping, children’s crafts and games, and refreshments, along with photos with Nana Claus. Free historic ornaments will be available for first arrivals, and door prizes will be awarded every hour.

The contests are now open, and rules can be found here. Entries for any of these contests should be dropped off during regular business hours, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, by 5:00 pm, December 11. No names should appear on the entered items.

• The Ornament Contest asks builders to use LEGO type bricks to make an ornament no larger than 6” x 6” x 6”, and not to use foil, paper, etc.
• The Gingerbread House Contest has five categories, including ones for children ages three to six and seven to ten, made with a kit. Other categories are houses built without a kit for seven- to ten-year-olds, 11 to 15-year-olds, and 16-year-olds and up.
• The Golf Ball Decorating Contest asks participants to decorate a golf ball for Christmas. Items can be added to or around the golf ball, however the entire decoration cannot be larger than 6” x 6” x 6”.

Winners will be announced during the Christmas Open House on December 13. Specific times are listed in the contest rules. Prizes for the contests vary and could include prizes or monetary prizes. Winners must claim their prizes in person at the museum by December 20; otherwise, the prize will be forfeited. All entrants to the contests will receive a Family Membership to the Joplin Historical Society.
