City of Joplin to Begin Paving Work on October 8 on Schifferdecker Avenue Before Moving to Connecticut Avenue

After working in neighborhood areas, the City of Joplin’s resurfacing program for 2025 will now focus on two major corridors in Joplin: Schifferdecker Avenue and Connecticut Avenue.

Work is scheduled to begin tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8, along Schifferdecker Avenue from 7th Street to 32nd Street. Blevins Asphalt Construction, the contractor, plans to finish this area by Monday, October 13, weather permitting.

On Tuesday, October 14, crews will move to Connecticut Avenue from Campbell Parkway to 32nd Street. Anticipated completion for these corridors is October 22, weather permitting

These roads will remain open during this paving project, and drivers should be alert for lane shifts and crews working in the area.

This work is referred to as “mill and overlay,” as the top couple inches of existing asphalt are removed (milling), and then workers lay a fresh new coat of asphalt over the area (overlay). Crews generally complete one side of the road and then return to finish the other side, allowing drivers to still have access by utilizing lane shifts.

City staff annually evaluate the pavement conditions of the City’s street system using the Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) system and recommend streets which require improvements. This review helps determine which streets are to be resurfaced, taking into account traffic counts, street classifications, structural integrity, and ride quality. Streets or parking lots may be added or deleted from this list.

This project is funded through the Transportation Sales Tax, Capital Improvement Sales Tax, and Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax Funds. For more information, contact Traffic Engineer Dakota Rusk at 417.624.0820, ext. 1598, or Drusk@joplinmo.org.
