City of Joplin Sets Public Meeting on September 8 to Discuss Demolition of Pennsylvania Avenue Viaduct

The City of Joplin will host an Open House Public Meeting on Monday, September 8, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm on the fifth floor of City Hall, 602 S. Main Street. The meeting will focus on the demolition of the Pennsylvania Avenue viaduct and discuss future options for the area.

Citizens are encouraged to attend any time during these hours to view the plans and ask questions about the upcoming construction project. City engineers and representatives of Olsson, the project’s consultant, will be available to talk with residents about the information.

This demolition will occur before the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) starts the reconstruction of Route 66/7th Street from Schifferdecker Avenue to Range Line Road. MoDOT is currently in the design phase of its project, with anticipated construction to begin in mid to late 2026.

The 1929 bridge was closed in 2019 after state inspectors found it unsafe for vehicle traffic and pedestrians.

This project was included in the Capital Improvement Sales Tax, supported by voters in 2024.  If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to discuss the project, please contact Rob Beachner at 417.624.0820, ext. 1543 or rbeachne@joplinmo.org.
